The community who reads together…

blog image

Community reading programs seek to unite a group of people around a certain book, engaging with a piece of literature together, finding common ground and in the end becoming closer. Members of the USD community have no shortage of such programs to choose from – join us!

USD Just Read! – This is a program that provides an opportunity for a campus-wide conversation about the themes and issues presented in one piece of powerful literature. This year’s book is The Ghost Map, an account of the 1854 cholera epidemic in London by Steven Johnson. Some of the major themes to be discussed throughout the academic year include public and environmental health, reason vs. ideology, and provision for the public good among others. The Center for Educational Excellence has lined up a full schedule of events for the semester http://www.sandiego.edu/cee/usd_just_read.php

One Book, One San Diego – Beyond the borders of the mesa, USD is now affiliated with a county-wide community reading program, One Book, One San Diego. Along with other area libraries and community organizations, Copley Library is involved in the selection process for the One Book each year. This year’s selection is Caleb’s Crossing by Geraldine Brooks. The story, set in 17th-century Martha’s Vineyard, depicts the complex relationships between Native Americans and Puritan colonists. The One Book, One San Diego program hopes that the San Diego community will examine and apply the themes and issues in this historical fiction work to our lives and relationships today. Copley Library is proud to host one of the inaugural events of the One Book programming season, an author talk and book signing on October 2 at 10:00am in Warren Auditorium. Many more events are scheduled throughout the county in the coming months http://www.kpbs.org/one-book/2013/
