Building Pathways between Border Libraries

As the closest university to the California/Baja California border, the University of San Diego benefits from the cultural exchange enjoyed during visits to the campus from our Mexican neighbors. These visits enhance our international contacts and encourage the university’s flourishing efforts in strengthening our relationship with Mexico.  Widespread interest in scholarly border exchange emanates from across academic disciplines at USD.  Copley Library seeks to promote this interest with border collections and related services for our university community and beyond.

In a recent opportunity, Copley Library welcomed eleven library personnel from UABC Mexicali, Mexico on Monday, February 1, for an afternoon tour of the library. The visitors were winding up their day-long trip to San Diego, which included a stop earlier in the day at the San Diego Public Library.  Copley Reference Librarian Alma Ortega greeted the visitors and showed them key areas of the library, including the Reference area, Special Collections and Archives, Copley Lower Level stacks, and the Technical Services Department.  The tour culminated with refreshments in the Seminar Room while Alma offered a short presentation on Copley’s resources.

The visitors showed keen interest in the Archives Reading Room and the Special Collections area as well as the library’s arrangement with Circuit and Technical Services’ processes for moving along newly added materials and donations. They mentioned they were interested in learning about successful and evolving workflows at USD because they are exploring their own. After refreshments, Alma provided a brief campus tour that included a stop at Founders’ Chapel and ended by the Garden of the Sea to conclude their visit.

Copley Library will continue to strengthen ties with neighbors across the border. Sharing knowledge, experiences, and ideas builds the community pathways needed to navigate successfully in the 21st century.

¡Nuestro intercambio amistoso es muy importante!
